The Spiritual Meaning in the Three Gifts That the Magi Presented to Jesus
Gold usually represents wealth and prosperity but as Matthew 6:21 says, "for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also," so the gold spiritually refers to our heart. Therefore, giving gold as a gift is to give one's heart. It means we give everything we have to the Lord.
God is delighted with those who give gold to Jesus. God gives them the beautiful kingdom of heaven that is built with gold and precious gemstones. God lets them enjoy eternal life and blessings in heaven later.
Frankincense Symbolizes the Fragrance of Christ
Frankincense gives out good aroma and removes bad odor. Spiritually, it refers to the fragrance of Christ. Spiritually giving frankincense to the Lord is giving out the aroma of Christ through deeds of goodness and casting away all forms of evil.
Jesus has redeemed mankind from their sins that are full of filth and stench and He leads us to holiness. And for those who circumcise their hearts and give out the aroma of Christ, they will prosper in all things and be in good health, just as their soul prospers, as in 3 John 1:2.
Myrrh Symbolizes Unchanging Faith
Myrrh acts as preservative. In giving the gift of myrrh the magi were giving something that never perishes spiritually. The act of giving myrrh represents unchanging faith. In order not to have unchanging faith, we first have to cast away all forms of evil as in 1 Thessalonians 5:22. As long as we have remnants of evil in us, we might change our mind any time trying to serve our own interests. Those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ will be given the gift of the Holy Spirit, so that their dead spirit will be revived, and eventually they will gain an eternal life in a spiritual body that will never perish.
